The American Library Association’s “Great Websites for Kids” website is similar to Common Sense Media, the last website we reviewed, in that it is a warehouse of websites appropriate for children.
“Great Websites for Kids” is very easy to use. The sites are set up in categories (animals, sciences, etc.) and displayed in a way that enables the viewer to quickly identify the nature of the site. A brief description of each site is provided as well as indications of appropriate age levels. So, you aren’t provided not too much information about the site, but the information that is provided is enough to determine if you might be interested in this site for your children.
· “Site of the week” is introduced and spotlighted each week.
· “Most Popular” sites
· “Top Rated” sites
· Categories – Animals, The Arts, History/Biography, Literature/Languages, Mathematics/Computers, Reference Desk, Sciences, Social Sciences
Although we don’t endorse allowing children too much screen time, there is so much great information on these sites to spark children’s interests and, therefore, their curiosity. As they gather background knowledge, they build a storehouse of information to use later in generating creative ideas. Plus, the websites inspire creative activities.
If you use the site, please give us feedback in the comments section. Or, if you know of any great sites, we’d love to hear about them.
